OnlineRadicalization

Let's be clear. We are all "radicalized online".

In one sense, the internet brings us so much more new, potentially disturbing, information, how could we not be?

Nevertheless, here's another example in the genre of "ordinary bloke who's FallenDownTheRabbitHole and become a violent extremist."

And these examples are striking.

I think this is a big challenge to our intuitions around FreedomOfSpeech. Arguments about freedom of speech that don't consider all the new things we are learning about how online lies or even online outrage affect people, are simply out-of-date and inadequate.

Yes. Arguments in defence of freedom of speech are all valid. Yes, government censorship is a big problem. But we are now able to observe mass information flow, NetworkPropaganda and FakeNews and SocialMediaThought at a scale we've never encountered in history.

And the evidence is stacking up about how it affects people. How it makes us less well informed, as we're bamboozled by conflicting information that we can't assimilate.

Of course what we can do about that is another matter. I don't know. But first step is to admit that we have a real problem.

Obviously, the guy in the story did have some domestic violence in his past. Which seems a very good predictor of someone turning to "violent extremism".
