In 2023 we're seeing a round of fascination with and ConspiracyTheories around UFOs.
Partly due to DavidGrusch, who "led analysis of unexplained anomalous phenomena (UAP) within a US Department of Defense agency until 2023" and is now giving evidence to US Congress that he's been told that the US military has crashed alien spaceships and bodies.
I'm not very excited by this. I think it's highly unlikely to be true. And, the guy isn't claiming to have seen any of this himself, he's repeating hearsay.
But it's kind of weird that all these conspiracy theories are based on the principle that different bits of the NationState don't really know what each other are doing. And, in fact, can't even find out. Not even the politicians and president of the US know if the US military (which they are allegedly in charge of) actually have alien spaceships? That's kind of a dysfunctional organization. Though I guess conspiracy thinking is predicated on institutions being able to keep secrets through compartmentalization.
Seriously. Does anyone think that if DonaldTrump were officially briefed about UFOs, he wouldn't have spilled the beans?
I was particularly struck by this quote from TheGuardian :
For decades, US politicians have been reluctant to get involved in the topic of UFOs and aliens.
After a series of disclosures in recent months, however, Republicans and Democrats now appear to be lining up to inquire into the question of extraterrestrial life, as the world seems closer than ever to finding out whether we are alone in the universe.

My speculation is that this is part of TheEndOfConsensus and the collapse of the MemeticEcosystem due to the internet. Politicians are increasingly falling in with "conspiracy theories" because such theories are increasingly the only models of the world anyone has (now that there's no accepted authority and authoritative model of the world)
