TheChallengeOfRepetition
ThoughtStorms Wiki
Everything used to be made by hand.
By definition, everything was unique. It was hard work. But it gave rise to difference and originality.
Then came the age of automation. And we found ways to make more of everything. As long as it was the same.
Today, the challenge is to escape repetition.
To find ways to inject the unique and idiosyncratic back into the things made by automation according to a common plan.
Of course AlgorithmicArt is a way of making mechanical things that don't "repeat" exactly.
But perhaps it raises questions about what counts as "repetition". What if an algorithm can give you something that's not directly repetition, but doesn't actually bring in new information in the InformationTheory sense because it's just a standard technique for varying.
But are all MusicalVariations "low information"?
