ChristopherAlexander started from analyzing patterns on praying carpets. It is interesting how mandalas are in many places similar to those praying carpets, but also interesting are the differences (for example the praying carpets are exactly symmetrical while mandalas have symmetry in contours, but colours have a kind of antisymmetry). – ZbigniewLukasiak
