Music becoming increasingly, and increasingly obviously a HyperText.

Of course, the development of music was always a history of intertwingled, reciprocal influences.

But two technologies made a difference.

  • recording made music into an AddressableThing. It was possible to ReIndividuate a performance, turning it into a place.
  • TurnTablism / sampling made the re-use of sections of existing recordings into a new compositional strategy. Samples became far more explicit hyper-links between one addressable piece of music and another.

With explicit addressable nodes, and a mechanism for making links, music became a blatant hyper-media.

Maybe other AddressableThings and links made other networks. For example, a famous musician with a recognisable sound / contribution could play on different recordings. The musician is an addressable thing. The appearance on different recordings, or membership of different bands, makes the links.
