Certainly to have evolved at all the ecosystem has homeostatic or negative feedback features. Which is where Lovelock gets the idea that the Earth system will, to an extent compensate for the damage humans do it, eventually killing many humans off, to rebalance.

Although he's not naive about this. He can see that the Earth can be perturbed from a human-friendly state to a human-hostile one.
