This is the real issue.
It's inevitable, with TheEndOfConsensus that the internet has brought us, that science as an institution which claims to be authoritative will get overwhelmed.
As in all cases, the authority will be undermined by a two pronged attack :
- accusations of impropriety and inadequacy
- flooding it with fake / bad science which is struggles to filter out.
Of course, this attack isn't necessary from a single, co-ordinated enemy. The attack is from a swarm of loosely co-ordinated, diversely motivated enemies. Perhaps enemies of only specific areas of science (from crackpots to ClimateChangeDenialists to supporters of the RightWingDeathCult and RightWingBlogMobsVsLeftWingAcademics
Supporters of AcademicJournals will blame OpenAccess journals.
