FacebookCensorship

ThoughtStorms Wiki

Of course FaceBook are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

We all want them to stop the FakeNews and Covid19 disinformation.

But when our causes are caught up, eg http://www.defenddemocracy.press/facebook-deactivates-dozens-of-accounts-of-palestinian-journalists-and-activists/ then we disapprove.

This shows the limit of an approach that's based on form not content.

But that in turn is the paradox of liberal power.

Which claims to treat all equally and not judge content. (Eg freedom of speech, fair trials etc are available to everyone regardless of content)

I understand Zuckerberg's reluctance to censor the QAnon advocates and COVID deniars. Even as I regret it.

But what it really shows is how feeble our epistemic machinery is, that we can't find a liberal principle to decide between dangerous nonsense and fringe activism.
