In PhilipGreenspun's ArsDigitaCommunitySystem, the Bozo Filter was the preferred way to deal with unwelcome community members. Instead of banning them (which simply made them create new accounts) it hid their comments from everyone except them. So no-one else saw the comments, but they, themselves could see them and didn't realize they'd been effectively "excluded".
