BandCamp

ThoughtStorms Wiki

Online site for artists to sell their music.

I actually buy music there, from indie artists that touch me in some way. Like LuckyDragons and Vektroid and SofiaReta

I also have a couple of pages of PhilsMusic over there. Eg. Mentufacturer

Bandcamp bought by Epic Games. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/mar/07/bandcamp-sells-to-epic-can-a-video-game-company-save-independent-music

Now seem to have sold it again : https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/songtradr-recognize-bandcamp-united So what was that all about. Why bother?

This is VERY interesting. The argument is that Epic Games only bought BandCamp as part of their war with Google and Apple who were charging 30% fees for all digital downloads. Epic could say that this excessive charging would destroy BandCamp's model of paying a lot higher percentage (about 90%) to artists.

This is really an Enshittification story. Not, in this case, that Epic planned to enshittify BandCamp, but they planned to use it as a legal shield from exploitation of enshittified mobile platforms run by Apple and Google. Now, presumably, BandCamp has served its purpose (not sure if it helped or didn't), Epic got rid of it as quickly as possible :-(

An interesting thread
