I'm starting to wonder if there's a connection between Autopoiesis and ChristopherAlexander's notion of TheQualityWithoutAName or "aliveness" that good patterns have. After all, good patterns are patterns which contain the forces they create, whereas bad or AntiPatterns can't contain these forces and so fall apart. An autopoietic system is basically one which maintains its own integrity, and preserves its own boundaries, ie. protects itself from internal forces ripping it apart.
