Vampires are an elite. Stories of vampires either offer us the chance to identify with the masses, oppressed or preyed-upon by the elite, or to fantasize that we can join them.

Zombies on the other hand are a mob, a mass. Zombie stories invite us to put ourselves in the position of a besieged elite of surviving humans, or to fear that we have been overcome by mediocrity and sunk into the masses.
