About favelas (OnFavelas), I recommend reading Carolina Maria de Jesus. She has lived in a favela in São Paulo in the fifties and reports from daily life in a place where those who cannot live anywhere else end up going. She raised three kids gathering discarded goods in the streets. Her diary is touching and thoroughly sober.
