Yes, there is a trade-off between happiness and self-discipline.

Some try to finesse it by assuming that self-discipline now always adds up to greater happiness later. Not guaranteed though. Sometimes the future needs to be discounted.

Sometimes it blurs into happiness vs. discipline (eg. imposed by others or "the market".)

Then you have to be very careful.

• it might be a trade-off between my happiness and yours.
• free time (to enjoy yourself) is one of the most egalitarian types of value ... everyone can only have the same amount of time. Whereas "production" is something which can be concentrated in the hands of the rich. So ... when being offered a deal which trades the utility of leisure time for the utility of goods and services you might be being suckered into trading something which you can easily hold onto your fair share of (time) for something which you're going to get an inferior part of (material possessions).
