Roko's Basilisk is an AISafety thought experiment, which envisages that in the future, a powerful AI has simulated the history of its own becoming.

We are, ourselves, in that simulation. And the powerful AI is effectively "God" for us.

If that AI discovers we have tried to thwart it coming into being, it can (and perhaps will) punish us (in simulation, but that's all we are) horribly.
