In a slightly arcane discussion over XSLT vs. XQuery, DareObasanjo says query and transformation are two sides of the same coin.

The bigger picture is sound though. Pulling data out of a data-structure and organizing it into a report (ie. a "query") is really the same thing as a "transformation".

You shouldn't see them as different or requiring different tools.
