Many builders of the web were originally schooled in other media. In particular commercial magazines, television and radio.

The hallmark of these media is intrusive advertising. And the same technique came to the web. However, intrusiveness is intolerable in the space of the net, in a way that it isn't in passive media. Being obstructed by advertising is like living in a house whose every internal door is locked. To move from one place to another you must unlock the obstacle. (Kill the pop-up, scroll past the advert.)

Other attempts to artificially impede progress (entry tunnels to web sites) etc. are equally despised.

Avoid all obstructions.
