Update 2021 : Of course, these days, this kind of "pro-amateur" "anti-expert" thinking is not so cute. It's brought us a lot of bad populist politicians, antivaxx conspiracy theorists, Brexit etc.
I think the thing we might have forgotten is that "outsider geniuses" are outliers ... and most outsiders are genuinely cranks. We were so caught up in the romance of the outsider genius who triumphed over a hidebound establishment that we were seduced into imagining that all outsiders were heroes.
Rather than only a few statistically rare ones.
