Networks are partly constructed out of standards. Whenever a standard is invented to help communication or co-ordination, an opportunity for a network appears.

Think about Containerization in shipping. The standardization of a single size and shape container for ships, road and rail transport, and containing all types of goods created a far smoother network for trading.
