I have paradoxical beliefs about music (the art form I love most).

I simultaneously believe in aesthetic realism - that good and bad are objective -; but that the criteria for good and bad are genre relative - what makes a great symphony isn't the same as what makes a great punk single; but that genres are just a subjective taxonomy humans invent for the convenience of organising our record collections.

Now these three can't all be simultaneously true. But I find it impossible to give one up.
