Karaoke

ThoughtStorms Wiki

I use the term Karaoke to refer to what JacquesAttali warns about in Noise .

Noise predicts a coming mode of "Composing" : an economic system where individuals make the music (or other products) they want as a kind of bricolage of other people's music (or creative output). Karaoke leads the desire to create astray, by putting it on rails through WalledGardens. A kind of "paint-by-numbers" product is sold which gives people the impression of expressing themselves and contributing to a cultural ecology, but in fact leaves them with neither.

What about ... ahem ... sound-trackers and sample or loop based music compositions like FruityLoops (the tool I use for a lot of my music). Having deskilled and taken so much freedom out of the music composition process, aren't they really a kind of karaoke?
