An interesting essay, that's hard to do justice to in a short summary :

The basic story is that the the fear of academia killing capitalism came from the worry of an overproduction of educated people who couldn't thrive in the economy and would turn their dissatisfaction towards socialism.
While such a phenomenon might have been building up towards the radicalism of the 1960s, the response to the 60s was a growth in academic administration aimed at making students more comfortable, combined with a focus on PeerReview which tended to cement in academic orthodoxy. Ie. more focus on peer review made it harder for mavericks to get funding.
This is meant to have made academia less innovative. (DeclineInInnovation)
