Good article. Why shouldn't we be able to talk to databases without proprietory drivers?
Though personally, my preference would be for something ReSTful (WhatIsRest) with the db having a webserver built in, being configurable through some basic forms, and for putting strings of SQL and receiving record sets encoded as XHTML tables (MicroFormats)
