This week, (ie. March 31st, 2004) was the 40th aniversary of the Brazilian military coup of 1964. For 20 years, until 1984 Brazil was an undemocratic military dictatorship, with disappearancs of opponents of the government, torture of "subversives" by the police, and a low level resistance movement.

The anniversary produced from the media a general, "isn't it good that we're all free and democratic" now kind of analysis. And some left-wingers to point out that socially, there isn't much difference in Brazil now from the time of the dictators.
