Once I wrote something where I joked about the "black and white times". Those times we only know distanced through black and white photography.
Lack of colour is a huge psychological barrier to us understanding / empathising with the past.
In many ways, coloured paintings from the 17th century make it look more real to us than b&w photos from the beginning of the 20th.
To illustrate the point, some black and white photos skilfully coloured to make them look more real and relevant.
