Just had a scary thought. Is bad web design a kind of Zehavi's HandicapPrinciple of advertising?

Are the companies flooding their sites with huge gratuitous graphics, unreadble fonts and Flash animations signalling "web customers? We don't need to care about no stinking web customer's. We're big enough and rich enough to do without pandering to help you web-people use our site." And this actually inspires confidence, trust and acceptance of the brand?
