Read this interesting thread with conversations about scepticism about abstractions.

In general I'm more in favour of / defensive of abstractions here (when they are less cumbersome and verbose) than many people seem to be.

But it's worth understanding more.

Do mathematicians have better abstractions than programmers because they are more conservative / careful about creating them?

For many more examples, check the history of mathematics. Mathematics is all about abstractions, but new ones get introduced slowly and carefully, after experience has been gathered from many concretions.
