It distinguishes between two common AI critical positions you see a lot now :
- AI is fake and sucks
- AI is real and terrible
It's useful to have this distinction because the hallmark of what I find irritating and sloppy in AI critique is when someone doesn't know which camp they are in and freely mixes and matches complaints they've picked up from both, without recognising the contradictions between them. "AI doesn't work AND will take your job", "No one wants AISlop AND we'll burn the planet overproducing it" etc
It's not that these contradictions can't be made to work. But you owe us an explanation of how they combine. Just regurgitating both complaints without noticing how they pull in different directions makes you look as mindlessly and unimaginatively dependent on your source material as you think GenerativeAI is.
