Update 2013 : Some of the ideas from SdiDesk have migrated into OWL OutlinerWithWikiLinking

Update: March 2012

I am no longer thinking of developing a new SdiDesk. Instead I've decided to re-orient all my wiki-tool development projects around the ProjectThoughtStorms.

My plan is to have a script that lets you import SdiDesk files into SFW (half written) longer term ... VisualStructureEditor support in the new ThoughtStorms wiki software.

Sep 2008, I've had someone convert to VB.NET ... source-code of work-in-progress currently at

About SdiDesk

Should be of interest to all you PersonalKnowledgeManagement / PersonalWiki fans.

(One of the IdeaProcessingApplications for TheEraOfTheGraph)

I'm very soft launching the prototype of a program I've been working on for the last few months. It's basically a desktop application which acts very like this wiki. You can use it for quick note-taking, HyperText authoring.

It has a couple of cool features that this wiki has :

And a couple of things it doesn't

But note, it's very much a prototype / draft / UnfinishedProject which I'm shipping to get feedback. And it's written in VB so it's Windows only. It might not even work on your configuration, but I don't have a lot of machines to try it on. It works on the Windows 98 machines I have available, but I don't know where else. All bug reports gratefully received.

Oh, and it's GPLed, so if you have a copy of VB, you can get going on the source code.

If interested go over to for for more details.

Maybe it should spit out GraphML

On C2 :

Are you taking a short (or long) break from SdiDesk? I do think the current version is a meaningful step forward. Too bad with the regular expression performance problem :(

Actually I got side-tracked on a number of other things : the new script for PhilsBlogRoll, some contract work for the government which I need to learn Zope / Plone for, some blog writing ... and I had this idea that I wanted to produce a DebugCast ie. a ScreenCast of me fixing a couple of the bugs that people had reported. The problem is that these debugging sessions turned out to be very long and crashed the machine when I tried to make them. Instead of fixing the bugs I've been trying to fix the screen-casting process. Not so productive.

I'm not taking a planned break exactly, but SdiDesk is not getting 110% of my free time as it was in the weeks immedietely before and after the last launch. But it's also not going into hybernation like it did last year either. New releases won't be long.

As for regexes. It's no big deal. I'm managing to do what I need with my own code.

Hi Phil,

I have moved house since I last corresponded. Saw exciting contribution in Sdi wiki and go have a look if you have not done so already. So can I expect a good diff in next release and that it will be available in early Jul05?

cheers from David the MS

Thanks, hadn't seen that. Yep, looks very interesting. Will check it out. (Once I've finished writing a toy programming language to show to my students tomorrow ;-) Hope the house move went OK. Also, are you checking out the new blog where I'm doing some public thinking about SdiDesk's future :
